How Many Have I Left Behind

©Eleanor Fairchild (Truly Carmichael)

My father was a Baron
My lady mother a gentle saint
I lived my life to harp and fife
And seldom found complaint
My father says I'll have the choice
Of who shall marry me
My mother says she wonders if
My wedding day I'll see

How many have you left behind
Oh Daughter with no heart?
You love and then you're gone again
To make another start.
How many more will fall before
You run no longer wild
Will no one ever capture you
My child.

I wandered from my homeland
And lovers fell like rain
But it only rained behind me
And I never knew their pain
My comrades understand my ways
Although they disagree
So often did I hear my dear
Companions say to me

How many have you left behind
Oh Lady with no heart?
You love and then you're gone again
To make another start.
How many more will fall before
You reach your journey's end
Will no one ever capture you
My friend

Of late, I've had a lover
Who captured me complete
With lying eyes and lips he made
False promises sound sweet
Before my eyes, to my surprise
He turned to walk away
And through my broken tears
I watched him turn and, laughing, say

So many have I left behind
Oh woman, just like you.
So save your tears for kinder ears
Your time and trouble too.
You're just the next to fall betwixt
The river and the sea
Find someone else to care for you not me

How many have I left behind
To shatter just like me?
How many found that they had drowned
In Love's despairing sea?
Don't be the next to fall betwixt
The mountain and the sky
Find someone who can care for you
Not I, Not I, Not I.

Eleanor's note: I wrote this piece many years ago. The story is almost true.
