Sonnet 5 (How Would You Have Love)
©2003 Alden Drake (Paul A. Haines)
If I could with these words your heart to move,
Or heap upon you gifts from far off lands.
Sweet Venus if my love that would not prove,
I’d make you something with my own two hands.
But if you find not love in flowery show,
I beg you not to turn your face away,
And look into my eyes that you might know
The depth of love that no words can convey.
Tis true I am a simple shepherd boy
And you a lady born to noble life,
I prithee will you my heart not destroy,
But share with me a lifetime as my wife.
If in these words the truth you cannot find
Then verily I’ll know that love is blind.
