Sonnet 1 (The Drums of War)
©2003 Alden Drake (Paul A. Haines)
The drums of war like thunder filled the sky.
For king and country we did heed the call.
For fame and glory did our swift swords fly,
But I still stand where my good friends did fall.
Alas my friends, wherever you have gone,
In honor of your names this ale I raise.
And lift my voice to honor you in song,
For Ansteorran heroes we give praise.
And yet tomorrow might I join thee still,
Should my blood stain the battle field of green.
I pray my friends their cups for me shall fill
If I should find my grave in yon ravine.
Remember those who fought with courage bold
And fell defending Ansteorran gold.
